I believe the current windows version of Hugin is missing part of the auto-stitcher software (autopano-sift-c.exe) due to patent issues. This means that the basic download will not automatically stitch the scene - you have to manually choose the control points. You can download autopano-sift-c.exe seperately but then you may find that the latest version doesn't work properly, so you have to get one before the latest version. Unfortunately I find that this kind of thing is not uncommon with linux/gnu software, which make it difficult for newcomers to get started.

Autopano-SIFT-C has been released. It is unlikely that you will find binaries in any of the major Linux distribution because they want to steer clear of patent issues.

However once you get it working, and once you understand its quirks, hugin is an amazingly powerful tool. To be more exact, install the latest version of hugin then google and download a recent version of autopano-sift-c.exe (windows binary version) and put it in the hugin bin directory. I find that the latest version of 'sift-c v 2.5.2 doesn't work, but version 2.5.1 does. Once you have this working the hugin is pretty much completely automatic - though recommend you try out one of the online tutorials - google is your friend!
